A BRIEF HISTORY OF MOTHER’S DAY
We, in America, celebrate many holidays but Mother’s Day is a special time celebrated by many cultures. It is one of the very few celebrations that has such a large participation. Americans set aside the second Sunday in May to honor their mothers.
Next we have Julia Ward Howe, who is well-known for being the author of “The Battle Hymn of the Republic." She championed the cause by rallying groups of mothers to speak out for peace, thus encouraging the recognition of mothers as a driving force in society.
In 1914, Woodrow Wilson signed a bill that recognized the second Sunday of May as a legal holiday. Thus was born “Mother’s Day. Presidents other than Woodrow Wilson supported this cause. Both Taft and Roosevelt were extremely active.
This day is looked forward to by many children as well as their mothers. It is the time when mothers are revered, and are shown the love of their children in very personal ways. Tons of flowers, candy, perfume, and quite a few other niceties are bought during the “Mother’s Day" season of the year. A special gift such as a grandfather clock, cuckoo clock, or etched glass clock would be a wonderful and memorable Mother’s Day present.
Each of us has many stories we could relate about life with our own mother, and the many little things that happened to us. These stories probably would not mean much to another person, but they are very close to our hearts.
A mother is a shining light! She is someone you can always go to with your problems, big or small. She is someone who is always there for you no matter what. She gives you the closest thing on earth to unconditional love. There is no one else in your life who could ever take the place of your mother. Her love is boundless and given freely.
Even though some of the time we do not agree with everything she says, does, or wants us to do on this particular day, she is our “Queen for a Day."
